Catechumenate
This Sunday is an interesting liturgical day — Christ the King or Reign of Christ Sunday. Unlike most of the church’s holy days, this one is relatively new. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 during the rise of nationalism and militarism in Europe. It acts as a constant reminder that the strength and authority of Jesus is exercised in vulnerability and service in self-giving love rather than in might and control, and that true power is shown in feeding, healing, clothing “the least of these” and raising the dead. The “King” is also “the least of these.” The “throne” of Jesus is a cross. What the world thinks is power is not, while real power and lordship is known by looking at “the one who had no place to lay his head.” As the Christian Year ends, we remember the upside down world of living in Christ, where the first will be last and the last first.
